When first looking at Sam, the first thing that can probably be noticed is his diminutive size. He is a thick, stocky figure, but only around three and a half feet tall. He is easily mistaken for a child by most from a distance, due to the fact that Hobbits retain a regular proportion with their tiny size; occasionally, he's even been mistaken for a child while directly talking to someone up close. Sam has since grown used to this, as well as the questions people might have about his kind and his people. There are a few things, however, that can easily dismiss this assumption upon drawing nearer to him; for example, his face, which is clearly that of an adult man of healthy weight. His eyes are perceptive and a light green, his cheeks are wide and slightly plump and his nose broad and round with slightly wide nostrils. His hair is curly and blond, and while shorter then Frodo's, is still rather shaggy and appears unwieldy to most humans. For the most part, his face is a kind and simple one; the appearance of someone given to company, laughter and food, as most Hobbits are.

Since leaving on the quest of the Ring, however, there have been some immediate changes to his demeanor and appearance. He does not appear very groomed for the most part; Hobbits don't grow facial hair, thankfully, so he's never had to worry about shaving. His hair appears unwashed and even more messy then most Hobbit men keep themselves, his clothes are dirty and worn and his face is normally dirty and sweaty. His face has grown harsher; laughter and happiness no longer clings to his face as easily as they once might have, and his eyes are often characterized by a sharp and searching quality rather then simply appearing perceptive and friendly. While this change isn't nearly as drastic as what is observed of Frodo, it's still there, and very much noticeable if you know him well.

Sam clocks in at a respectable 3'4"; being of Harfoot descent, he is decidedly shorter then his Fallohide master.

His build is described and perceived as being very stout and thick; out of the main Hobbits -- Tooks, Bagginses and Brandybucks -- he is the lowest of class, and the most accustomed to physical labor and hard work. Like most Hobbits, he is also quite given to food, lending him the common pudginess of a Hobbit. He is a very skilled cook on top of that, and while all of this is likely noticeable before his physical strength, he is not as out of shape as he might appear at first glance.

Sam carries himself as well as he can; Frodo's uncle, Bilbo, has had a clear influence on him in this regard. He stands up straight in most everyday situations, and carries himself fairly properly.

Sam's voice is not all that remarkable, for anything else then its rustic leanings. It's deeper then Frodo's voice, and more rough, but not by much. His word choice is plain and -- for the most part -- respectful, but the sentence structure he uses does not seem always to fit this, and it is very improper and informal. There are also a few verbal quirks that he's known for; saying et, etted or etten instead of eat, ate or eaten, or using all manner of contradictions -- weren't never is a fairly common one. He also has a tendency to punctuate his statements with a variety of confirmations; if you'll follow, or if you understand me are prime examples. Many of these quirks are largely in due to his accent and lower-class birth.

All of this gives his speech a very unpolished feel, as is expected of a lower-class family of Hobbiton, especially when compared closely to his master's proper and elegant way of speech. He speaks with very rounded syllables, and does not give hard consonants the proper hard sound that most would; his T's and Sses are especially subject to this, and come to the ear as very soft sounds.

Even at home, Sam was never a Hobbit of particular note in this department, and even less so after leaving for his adventure. His traveling clothes consist of a pair of short brown trousers, a well-worn white shirt and an open striped vest. He has a set of suspenders, though since starting off with Frodo, he's taken them off and keeps them in his bag due to their state of disrepair. On his shoulders is fastened an elven cloak, grey-green in colour and held at his shoulder by a Lorien-leaf brooch. Sam is also commonly seen with a durable canvas backpack on, from which hangs various pots and pans and a bedroll for himself and Frodo. He also carries a satchel with him, and a sheathed sword. Though he has a few different sets of clothes to change into, they are all similar to this basic outfit, perhaps with or without the vest or a grey waistcoat he wears for warmth occasionally, a plaid work shirt with a brown vest or other assorted articles he carries with him. They all look quite stained and worse for wear, though he now has the means and time to wash them. The cleanest article of clothing he owns is a present from Frodo since arriving; a grey fleece jacket, which he's found ample use for in the colder months. He wears nothing on his large feet; not only do few things fit them, but the hair on the top is thick and deeply rooted. Anything that covers his feet tends to bend it, and is quite uncomfortable and painful to bear for any period of time.

Being the designated labourer between himself and Frodo, Samwise carries many articles with him in his pack, though not all of them are his. He carries both of their alternate changes of clothes, pots and pans for cooking, all of their food and tools for survival. These include a small hand-shovel, flint and tinder, fresh rations, their dwindling supply of Lembas, a packet of pipe-leaf and a slender wooden pipe. He has since lost the Elvish rope of Lady Galadriel, after perishing at the hands of Heartless at the end of December, but most of his other belongings are still with him and in tact.

Being three feet tall and having massive, hairy feet are pretty big ones. He also has large, pointed ears, but he looks largely mundane in terms of Hobbits.

" 'If you don't come back, sir, then I shan't, that's certain,' said Sam. 'Don't you leave him! they said to me. Leave him! I said. I never mean to I am going with him, if he climbs to the Moon; and if any of those Black Riders try to stop him, they'll have Sam Gamgee to reckon with, I said. They laughed.' " 'Shelter!' muttered Sam. 'If this is shelter, then one wall and no roof make a house.' " ~ Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

" 'My heart's right down in my toes, Mr. Pippin,' said Sam. 'But we aren't etten yet, and there are some stout folk here with us.' " ~ Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

" 'Noodles! My beautiful rope! There it is tied to a stump, and we're at the bottom. Just as nice a little stair for that slinking Gollum as we could leave. Better put up a signpost to say which way we've gone! I thought it seemed a bit too easy.' " ~ Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

" 'It would be the death of you to come with me, Sam," said Frodo, 'and I could not have borne that.' "Not as certain as being left behind,' said Sam." ~ Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
